Gender Equality
In today's modern society there are roles that need to be fulfilled by both the husband and the wife, not necessarily ones that are traditionally associated with that gender. Nowadays a family cannot function properly and efficiently with one person acting as the breadwinner and also trying to run the family at the same time. It is traditional that the husband would be the hunter-gatherer, breadwinner figure and that the wife would stay at home and cook, clean and look after the children, etc. Up until about 30 years ago it was not seen as acceptable for women to carry out the traditional roles of men and vice versa.
One of the most important duties in a family is a career so that the family will be financially supported as a lack of money could easily lead to bigger problems. Traditionally this would have been a man's obligation however, over the last thirty or forty years women have been rising to the challenge even in the most male dominated industries. This is said to be largely due to the increasing number of women going to university and other types of further education.
An example of this new era we are entering in gender equality is that not so many years ago if there was a family run business and then man who ran or owned it died, it would always be handed down to the eldest son. If there was no son then the widow or daughter was usually strongly discouraged from taking the business over and usually sold up. However, those times have since past and nowadays it is almost as usual for the daughter or widow to take over the business. Another important roles in running a successful family is the traditional housewife' role, which consists of cooking, cleaning and looking after the children, among other jobs. If it is just as common now for the wife to go out and be the breadwinner who will take up the traditional housewives' role?
