The universe is a malevolent and unfeeling force whose cruel intention is break and kill everyone. Some will survive and become stronger while the unfortunate ones will crumble and die due to emotional, mental, or physical wounds. The universe is virtually relentless in this destruction of life and uses the conventions of society and the forces of nature to keep life in line. There is no real escape from the danger and malevolence of the universe, except to find a haven, a safer place away from society and all its influences by developing a separate peace. One must realize and understand the true foul temperament of life and the universe to become an aficion. In confronting the true malicious disposition of the world as well as recognizing the only way to survive is to hide from its destructive force, the only means of escape would be to shun both society’s conventional values and faith lessons instilled during childhood. In developing this separate peace, one needs to create a new set of rules and morals of which to live by and to completely abandon mostly all emotions and obligations in the world. Only then will he or she seek the path to a separate peace, an emotionally remote place of which he or she find calmness and strength.   In the progression of Farewell to Arms, Frederick Henry sees the malevolence of the universe at work both in his life as well as those around him even though he may not realize it. He also observes instances in developing a separate peace as he tries to make his own. His education with these two aspects leads him from being a good little boy to eventually becoming a Hemingway Hero.
The universe is an unyielding power that is present throughout the world that causes death or destruction to all forms of life. It tries to break and kill off everyone in its path.
