Canada’s Online Pharmacies
      With the exponential growth of the internet, it is becoming more common place to buy products online. It is no surprise that the 600 billion dollar industry of prescription drugs followed suit and began selling online. These online pharmacies create cross border issues that many ethical issues arise from. These issues need to be taken seriously due to the fact that people’s lives are at stake when dealing with prescription drugs.   This essay will discuss how online pharmacies are intertwined in the inefficient American healthcare system and the Canadian drug supply and the safety concerns surrounding them.
      The success of the Canadian Online pharmacies has a lot to do with the flaws in the American healthcare system. To understand why Canadian online pharmacies exist, one must first understand how pharmaceutical companies operate.   The American healthcare system unlike the Canadian healthcare system, does not regulate the prices of prescription drugs. This means uninsured Americans pay on average 30 to 80 percent more then Canadians do for the same name brand prescription drugs. For this reason the 45.8 million Americans who are uninsured find it very difficult to afford prescription drugs. (“Number”) Imagine living in a country where the citizens avoided getting hurt or sick, not only because it leads to being unproductive for a few days, but rather because they could easily be forced into bankruptcy.   This is the world that many Americans live in: one of fear. The price gap in prescription drugs is also evident within the U.S.A. where “Uninsured patients pay an average of 72% more for their prescriptions than the government pays for the same drugs for federal health plan enrollees.” (Finkelstein) Canadian online pharmacies help close this gap by providing Americans the name brand prescription drugs at the Canadian regulated prices.
