Escape
Stepan: Stepan was a strong older Russian prisoner of war in Norway along with thousands of others. They had been taken prisoner by German troops in the Ukraine, and the victors now sent them to Norway and to other occupied countries to work for them there. Stepan lived in a concentration camp where Ingrid and Elling, the main characters, smuggled food to him so he could survive with out having to eat grass and worms off the ground. Stepan was a trained technician and held a good position in factories when he lived in Ukraine. But in the Gudbrand Valley, where he was taken too, he just had to dig like all the others. But with his free time he devoted himself to art. For appreciation of what Elling and Ingrid have done for him, every night he worked on an art piece for them that he would give them when they became married. Because Elling and Ingrid knew Stepan couldn\'t survive much longer, they made a bold plan to free Stepan from his German captors and to smuggle him across the border into neutral Sweden.
Ingrid: Ingrid was a 14year old girl who was best friends with Elling since the age of six. Elling and Ingrid end up marrying later on in life. Ingrid lived on the countryside of Norway until it was shattered by German conquest in the spring of 1940. Forced to move from their coastal homes to an inland valley, Ingrid and Elling came to know Stepan, who was a prisoner in a nearby German camp. Engrid and Elling took parcels to the Russian camp as often as they could. Even if they themselves had worse food than they were accustomed to, they realized that things were much harder for the prisoners than for them. They soon learned enough German to talk to the sentries, and after a time many of the German soldiers managed to speak fairly good Norwegian.
