Lauren Sturtz   10/10/07   World B3   Egyptian - Meso. Comparative Essay   Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations had similar polytheistic religions. According to an anonymous person, “Each god …was associated with an element…with celestial bodies or was a descriptive statement about the god such as strong…” (www.touregypt.net/gods1.htm). The gods the Egyptians believed in were outstanding beings that took the form of a human with, in most cases, the head of the animal that was most sacred to the god. They also had human traits and emotions. What the gods ruled over, such as the sun or the sea, depended on where the civilization was settled and what was around them. There were many gods for many elements of the earth. The Egyptians believed that Re was the creator of all things. There were also gods of heaven and earth, the sky, the sun, justice, and the annual flooding of the Nile River. In Mr. Moore’s notes, he states that, “Mesopotamian pantheon of gods reflected on the lifestyles of the Mesopotamian people,” (Mesopotamian Civ. Notes- e-board). Like the Egyptian gods, the Mesopotamian civilizations’ gods were very much like human beings. They were angry, aggressive, and unpredictable. The Mesopotamians carved pictures of these human-like gods in order to tell their stories and adventures about their gods.
