Early Civilizations Comparison Essay
Honors World Studies

As the final writing component for this first unit of Honors World Studies, you will write a comparison paper on TWO of the civilizations we have studied. In choosing two of the following civilizations, consider which civilizations interest you the most and the civilizations that you believe would make an interesting comparison. Comparison means that you must address both similarities and differences.
▪ Mesopotamia
▪ Egypt
▪ Harappa/India
▪ China

Requirements – Read them carefully!!
✓ The paper must have an analytical thesis statement. The thesis statement must be in the introductory paragraph of your paper. Underline the thesis in your paper.
o A good thesis statement must identify how the two civilizations are similar and different and why the similarities/differences exist or the relationship between the similarity and the difference.

✓ You must use direct comparisons in your paper. Rather than describing one civilization entirely, and then separately describing the second civilization entirely, you must make statements that compare the same topic for the two civilizations in the same sentence. Using the following words and phrases will help you do this:
o Similarity words: both, as well, also, in common, just as, like, shares, similarly, too
o Difference words: although, but, however, in contrast with, instead of, while, unlike

✓ You must integrate at least 1 primary source into the body of your paper. When using a textual primary source, use an appropriate quote and be sure to paraphrase (put into your own words) the meaning of the quote.

✓ You must cite ALL information that comes from sources, including the textbook, with parenthetical citations. Even if you have paraphrased the information! If you use sources other than the textbook, also include a Works Cited page.
o Egyptian civilization had an...
