The internet is an open portal to allow people to download information and files. Each source from which information or files are available must be taken into account before users download from them; some could be viruses and some could be legitimate. Determining whether or not a file is a virus or not is difficult, a person must try to download from sources which are noted as reliable and have no viruses. The most efficient way to ensure that corrupted files, or those with viruses, are not downloaded is to run a reliable virus scanner. If the origin of a particular file is know, one should still scan file to ensure that there is not virus and that the file is safe to run on any computer.
Many websites offer legitimate downloads of software, however, some of the software may have extra information embedded into the software that is used either for hacking, installing a virus or worm, or phishing for information. Once a program is selected from such a source, the user will be asked to either save or run the file immediately; saving the file may allow the user to scan it for viruses or worms, whereas running the file may install the software along with the virus or worm if it is built into the program. No matter whether a user runs or saves a program, the speed of the download is determined by the bandwidth of the internet service provider.
I have downloaded software which is known as shareware and freeware from sources such as http://www.download.com and other such sources. When downloading from sites such as this, the user is using mirrors which are located all around the world from other users of the same network.
