Divine Intervention
When one weighs in the mind which component in our identity holds the most influence on our character, some pin point it right away, while others may be a bit more apprehensive on even the word itself. Growing up my mother taught us to try not to bring up two subjects in conversation with those you are not as familiar with, politics, and religion. With that being said, the latter of the two topics is what is going to cause me to commit that taboo. Religion in and of its self is such a weighty and intrinsic part of life, so when we talk about what may influence our identity, it seems to burn the brightest. Its value is infinite and its impression on humanity is substantial. As you narrow down what it is at the foundation of a person’s character that dictates right and wrong for the individual, the mechanics of ethics is rooted in religion. An individual’s lifestyle is based off religious beliefs or a lack there of. And that is not to say that if you do not belong to any particular religious group that you have wrong values, but the degree of presence of a belief system in a person’s life directly and pointedly shapes how we each live our lives. Some may refute saying that it is solely an individual’s prerogative of how they lead their lives, that they do not live for any one entity but the wellness and success they derive out of their own individual efforts. Living a life where you and what you discern as being a “good person” is dangerous. And I have indeed met people like that. There is some truth in that mantra, but without some sort of guard rails in our value and belief system, things easily get astray.
As for myself I have slowly come to realize that an absence or weakness of a belief system makes you incredibly vulnerable to the jaws of the world.
