Defects of the Island
Everything in our world can have defects; society, civilization, mankind and human nature. Your human nature can be affected by the situation and can cause defects in everyone’s human nature. The society of a place depends on who controls what happens and often has many defects. William Golding’s Lord of the Flies displays the defects of society and human nature and how it can affect everyone. Golding expresses the boys’ instinct to live by rules and follow commands but how without a proper society their instinct and human nature changes. Lord of the Flies discusses how society created by men fails from our human nature. A group of British schools boys are in a plane crash and stuck on a deserted island and are forced to try and make things civil. Conflicts begin when they want to be civilized but all want power on the island.
The main character Ralph wants to be rescued and keep everyone safe, he becomes the leader of the boys at first. Jack is the oldest boy on the island and thinks he should have the authority over everyone there. Piggy is one of the smartest boys there and he thinks there should be order and rules on the island to follow. Golding shows the superego, Id and ego personalities through Ralph, Piggy and Jack. Ralph has the ego personality because he wants to please everyone in realistic ways. He listens to what everyone says and compromises with them. Piggy has the superego because he knows the difference between right and wrong. None of the boys really listen so Piggy’s ideas but he is the most sensible boy on the island and know what they really should do. Jack represents the Id because is very selfish and cares about himself only. He mainly cares about having fun and having all the power to do whatever he wants on the island. With all the boys on the island with different personalities it causes a lot of conflict between everyone.
