A Critical Analysis Of Pro And Con Articles
For my Critical Issue Analysis paper I decided upon the topic of Sex Education in the schools. This is a very controversial topic for many parents and communities. The many religious beliefs out there each have their own view on how this topic should be handled. As a parent I want my child to learn the right information about his body and about sex; but, I am also unsure if he would be ready to learn about it in a school setting. Another thing I take into consideration is if he is mature enough to handle it at the time, as well as what content will be provided.
My pro side readings was “Sex Education should be Taught in Schools” written by Joycelyn Elders. The article’s major thesis is that schools should provide a Sex Education class to teach the teens about their body and the risks of sex. Mrs. Elders states many facts in her article. In one section she states that “condoms being provided in the schools did not increase the sexual activity of the teens.” Many parents are fearful that providing condoms to students opens the window to having sex when they normally would not. In actuality these teens are probably already having sex, just not using protection. Her next fact backs this up because she says that more than three million STDs are reported every year to teens under 19 years old. Herpes has increased by 30% and there are 900,000 teen pregnancies a year. Based on this information I think it is safe to assume that the teens are in fact having sex and it is unprotected. Having condoms provided at school doesn’t mean they are using them. Having factual information in the school along with having condoms keeps the students informed.
One opinion, that clumps many parents together by saying we are all trying to maintain a “Victorian attitude”, makes it sound as though we are all too uptight to discuss these issues with our children.
