Criminal Behavior
Criminal behavior has been very difficult to determine based on the debate between nature and nurture. An individuals behavior can either be determined by his genetic makeup or the environment that he is raised. Through research that has been done in the past years it has been determined that both genetics and the environment play a role in criminal behavior. A large research has been done on twins, adoptions, and families. Most researchers say that these studies help support the fact that genetics do play a role in criminal
behavior.
Twin research has been going on between identical and fraternal twins and the rates of criminal behavior between both of them. If the identical twins were to have a higher rate of criminal behavior than fraternal then it would be assumed that there was a genetic influence. One researcher studied 85 pairs of identical twins and 147 pairs of fraternal twins and found that identical had a higher rate for criminal behavior. After about 10 years the researcher checked police records of the same sets of twins and found that the criminal behavior rate had increased 54 percent. Of course there have been many other twin studies conducted but there is still a concern that there is not enough information to support them. Adoption research is very important in examining the connection between adopted children and their biological and adoptive parents. An example would be that of an adopted child to see if the biological parent had a past of criminal activity. The researchers found that the child still had a high rate of criminal activity as an adult. This supports the inheritability of criminal behavior. Family studies are the final type of study that researches have looked into. Researches have hesitated to use this field of research because it is so difficult to tell how the family environment was when the person was younger.
