Courage

Courage

CS states that courage is the virtue that is most recognized and in his words, ”courage commands respect.” His definition of courage is intriguing in that the examples he uses, such as a courageous SS officer or courageous terrorist, in comparison to cowardly SS officers and terrorists, sparks new thought as to who can be courageous. The answer is simply anyone, because courage is not dependant on one’s intentions, no matter how morally and ethically wrong they might be. He says that courage is, “only really morally estimable when at least partially in the service of others of others and more or less free of immediate self-interest.” I find that good example can be a courageous athlete. The courageous athlete who goes back into the game after a serious injury is courageous no matter what his intention is, however, the morality or sociological respectability of his actions depend on these intentions. If the motivation for playing hurt in the championship game is for the glory of the win for his teammates and fans, then the player is morally courageous. However, if the player is ten yards away from a million dollar contract incentive, and only reenters the game for his own self-interest, then he is still seen as courageous by those watching, but now his courage is not moral, it is only sociologically respectable. I feel that courage is a virtue no matter what the intentions of the courageous acts are, but it is only virtuous if the acts are selfless and in the interest of others.
