Courage In To Kill A Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is divided into two parts. Part one is about bringing the truth about Arthur Radley into the light. Part two brings out the truth about the Tom Robinson case and the prejudice in Maycomb County. Although many people in Maycomb County are prejudice, there are also a few people who are courageous. Mrs. Dubose, Atticus Finch, and Boo Radley exemplify great courage and they are important characters in To Kill a Mockingbird. ` Addicted to morphine, Mrs. Dubose went through great troubles trying to break her addiction on Morphine before she died. Atticus thinks Mrs. Dubose is the definition of real courage. “I wanted you to see something about her—I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.(128) Mrs. Dubose had withdrawal fits at which Jem and Scout witnessed. “I looked toward the bed. Something had happened to her. She lay on her back, with the quilts up to her chin. Only her head and shoulders were visible. Her head moved slowly from side to side...” (123) Eventhough Mrs. Dubose knew she had every right to take Morphine because she was old and sick, she was still determined to break her addiction.` Atticus Finch defends Tom Robinson knowing that he will loose the case. He conflicted with the town toprotect an innocent black man. Atticus does not back down to a mob of men that came to the jailhouse to harass Tom. Atticus refuses to teach Jem and Scout how to shoot, but still buys them a rifle. The kids later find out that Atticus is a good shot. A mad dog comes to Maycomb and Atticus kills it with one shot. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird teaches moral lessons and courage is one of the most important. This book tells you the real meaning of courage: the ability to confront pain, fear, humiliation, or anything else a person would naturally...
