Charlotte’s Web “Themes”
1.) Pity: Charlotte felt pity for Wilbur in the beginning, because he was sobbing that he didn’t had any friend to play with. Then, Charlotte comes to Wilbur and tells him he will be his friend; thus he became happier and his friendship Charlotte and Wilbur begins to develop.
2.) Friendship/Loyalty: Throughout the story, with the countless conversations Charlotte has with Wilbur, they have an understanding of each other and watch out for one another. They keep themselves company and Charlotte develops a plan later on in the story to save Wilbert’s life. Wilbert is worried that in winter the Zuckerman’s family would eat him, so to comfort Wilbert Charlotte promises him to save him from death. She stays by his side on the good times and the bad times. She never lost his respect or has done something to provoke any tribulations. By putting bold words in her web such as “Some pig”, “Terrific”, “Radiant”, and “Humble”, she has ensured his survival. The bond between Charlotte & Wilber is strong and holds the essence of what a true friendship is.
3.) Honor: When Charlotte is dying close to the end of the story, Wilbur shows honor by retrieving the eggs she laid. He keeps them warm throughout winter and took care of them. When the hatched in spring, he watched them move on to a new world and the ones that did stay he made friends. He did this till his last of his days and he still feels grateful of what Charlotte did for him and he keeps her memory alive.
4.) Kindness/Caring: The animals in the story were mean to Wilbur, calling him names and bringing down his self-esteem. Charlotte protected him by defending against such remarks and she made Wilbert feel secure & happy. Also, when Templeton(the rat) and the old sheep started talking about winter and how the family was going to eat him; Charlotte comfort him and promised that she will save his life.
