Charater: Alfred
Alfred Brooks
The contender has many interesting characters, but none as much as Alfred. Alfred Brooks is a 17 year old high school dropout. He has a dead end job and lives in a cramped apartment with his aunt and her 3 daughters. Throughout the book Alfred goes through changes that start to shape his whole life. He becomes a hard-working, committed and loving person.
In the final chapter James’ drug addiction has become so severe that he resorts to breaking into Epsteins for money for a fix. While breaking in James cuts himself badly and flees to Alfred and his childhood hiding place. When Alfred learns of this he knows exactly where James is. Alfred demonstrates his love for James by going to the cave to help him. Alfred lifts James to his feet and carried him through the stunted trees (Lipsyte 1). After everything that has happened between him and James he still is willing to help him because he loves him like a brother. Alfred also says to him “don’t worry about that James, I got plenty of blood for you” (Lipsyte 2).
Alfred also becomes a committed person. Alfred goes to a party on a Friday night and smokes pot and drinks. The same weekend he goes to Coney Island with Major and his gang. He is later chased by the police and spends the rest of the day alone. Discouraged and depressed Alfred decides to quit training. As he is cleaning out his locker he has a conversation with Donatelli and has an epiphany. He decides to keep working at it and is eventually allowed to start sparing (Lipsyte 3). He could of easily walked away right there and never looked back but he decided to stick it out and keep training. Alfred shows his greatest form of commitment in his final fight were he is being beaten mercilessly but refuses to be knocked out (Lipsyte 4). His opponent is bigger and a much better fighter but Alfred refuses to accept defeat and keeps getting up and taking shot after shot until the final bell sounds.
One night while walking home Alfred gets jumped by...
