Carl Sandburg - A Great American Poet

Sandburg's Poems embody the spirit and hope of the average working class american.


Carl Sandburg was one of the greatest American poets. His many travels kept him down to earth. He did not allow success to go to his head as other authors in the past have. Sandburg's poems embody the spirit and hope of the average working class American.
Carl Sandburg was born to Augusta and Clara Anderson Sandburg on January 6, 1878. He went to school until he was thirteen and in the eighth grade. He then dropped out to become a laborer. While doing this he traveled out west and formed an immediate and long lasting bond with the people and land of the west. While in the west he joined the army and fought in the Spanish-American war. After the war he was admitted to college because of his veteran status. While at Lombard College he met Professor Phillip Green Wright. Professor Wright encouraged Sandburg's writing skills. In fact Wright paid to have Sandburg's first poems published. Sandburg loved to see his poems in print so much, that all he wanted to be was a writer. However times were not good for him. Sandburg was forced to peddle for money and to write articles for a Chicago magazine for next to nothing. It was during this time Sandburg became very sympathetic towards the homeless, because he was almost one himself. Bad times would not last forever for Sandburg. He actually won two Pulitzer prizes. One for Abraham Lincoln: The war years, and the other for Sandburg's complete poems.
The first poem I decided to analyze was "Doors". The inspiration of this poem was all the homeless people, and the business tycoons he met in Chicago. The Literal meaning of this poem is that doors are all around us. They are sometimes shut, and other times open.
