Abstract
This paper identifies the facts, regulations and legal issues in the Business Regulation Simulation on the subject of Alumina. The paper will identify some of Alumina's key facts, regulation and legal issues in the simulation. This paper will identify several of Alumina’s values and stakeholders. Three alternate solutions will be discussed using the risk analysis matrix and summarized how the alternate solutions align with Alumina's values.
Business Regulation Simulation
Alumina Inc. is a $4 billion aluminum maker, based in the United States and operates in eight countries around the world. Alumina Company manufactures automotive components, alumina refining, bauxite mining and aluminum smelting Alumina falls under the jurisdiction of union six under the EPA.” (UOP, 2009). Barring this one incident, Alumina has been keeping the company with a first-rate record regarding the general environmental record. The company is under the following regulatory agencies and acts: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act.
In the past Alumina was reported to be in violation of environmental discharge norms in a routine EPA compliance evaluation inspection five years ago. EPA is stated as“proper a federal agency charged with the approval and overseeing of the use and disposal of hazardous materials. Workplace management of hazardous materials falls under the jurisdiction of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)” (Credo, 2004, p. 1). The PAH concentration in test samples was above the prescribed limit. (UOP). PAH is stated as “PAH do not generally occur as single substances but in combination, and the profile of PAH can provide information on the sources of contamination” (Credo, 2006, p.1).
