National Conference of the English Departments of the Faculties of Education in the Czech Republic

NEW TRENDS IN EDUCATING FUTURE TEACHERS OF ENGLISH IV

Olomouc, 14th October 2008

The fourth national conference, “New trends in educating future teachers of English IV”, was organized by the Department of English at the Faculty of Education, Palacký University, Olomouc. It took place on the premises of the department on October 14th 2008 and hosted teachers of English departments from Brno, Hradec Králové, Pardubice, Ústí nad Labem, and Olomouc.

The main purpose of the conference was to bring together teachers, after another year of hard work, to meet, listen and share what is new in the field of educating our students. I hope that we managed to meet the objectives of the conference and enabled our colleagues to discuss all the “burning issues”. The presentations were short, followed by fruitful discussions. Full versions of the papers appear in the conference proceedings: they are ordered alphabetically according to the names of their authors.

The topics that were discussed this year:
• Literature ' the use of drama activities; state exams in literature.
• Teaching American Culture and History.
• Communicative usage of translation in lower-secondary schools.
• Our students’ mother tongue awareness.
• Relevance of blended learning for full-time study programmes.
• Do our graduates utilize their knowledge of the subject matter in their teaching and how?
• Teaching practice-related problems.
• Entrance examinations to the Magister scheme.

As one of the organizers and the editor of the proceedings, I would like to thank all those who attended the conference and submitted their articles, simply all those who made our conference a success.
