Revenge…. the retaliation of wrongs and injuries against someone or something. In Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens he uses revenge as a drive for certain characters, and he also uses it as a way to show pain, anger, and hatred. Revenge is a way of separating people; different actions; different groups. Charles Dickens uses this book to show the differences between the nobles and peasants.
One way Charles Dickens used revenge to show the differences of behavior between nobles and peasants. An example is when Marquis ran over Gaspard’s boy with his carriage. Marquis cared more about his horses. “It is extraordinary to me, that you people cannot take care of yourselves and your children…. How do I know what injury you have done my horses.”(111). This shows the unwilling to care about the small child because Marquis has money; he tries to pay off the killing by giving gold. Another example is the beginning of the book when the small boy was getting his tongue ripped out. “ a youth to have his hands cut off, his tongue torn with pincers, and his body burned alive, because he had not kneeled down in the rain to do honour to a dirty procession of monks.”( 7-8) This also shows the inhumane acts that nobles did to peasants only to exert their power.
Another way he shows how the unwilling urge for the peasants to get revenge on the nobles. “Is it a good sign that that he wishes to see Nobility and Royality?” “Jacques…. judiciously show a cat milk if you wish her to thirst for it; show a dog his natural pray if you wish for him to bring it down one day”(171).
