The ethnic group that I belong to that is interesting to me to find out about its past would be immigrants from Ireland. In most cases Immigrants from all over the world have been discriminated against in some form when coming to the United States. Even today people coming over from other countries are still being discriminated against. A prime example of this would be people from Brazil. These people work manly manual labor jobs that pay "under -the -table." Because they are illegal immigrants without a green card or a legitimate social security number, companies employing these people give them very little to no benefits, well making them work long days and paying very little.
Today more than 12% of America's population is Irish Americans.(U.S census) In fact before the American Revolution began immigrants from Ireland were coming to the United States, these immigrants however where mostly men. Irish women did not start coming to North American until what was called the "Great Irish Famine" between 1845 thru 1849.(Wikipedia) Many of those women though did not survive do to poverty, poor health and overall bad conditions. Between 1820 and 1860, the Irish consisted of over one third of all immigrants to the United States. The trend peaked in the 1840's when nearly half of all immigrants to the United States were Irish. One form of discrimination that the Irish faced was a duel labor market, which has a primary and secondary sector. The Irish fell under the secondary sector which is mainly short-term employment with little or no prospect of promotion. These are low skill level, low earnings and often "pay-under-the-table" jobs. These Irish Americans were forced to work in textile mills, while also founding themselves being able to dominate the most difficult and dangerous jobs such as building railroads and oil refining.
