The opening shot of Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner” is perhaps the most well known in all of science fiction. Balls of flames are plagued into the sky as hovering transports fly past. Thick black smog like none have ever seen distinctly cover the atmosphere. The city of Los Angeles in the year 2019, is littered with lights and tall buildings. However, Blade Runner may remain a dark science fiction adventure, it is a film heavy on philosophy, controversy, and has inspired many others in the field of filmmaking. Its known for its powerful questions, including the “what makes us human?” query.
Although. At first glance, Blade Runner may appear to be a science fiction, it is also very evocative of film noir. Jordan Cronenweth, the film’s cinematographer, went to great lengths to get the desired noir look that director Ridley Scott had wanted. Like noted before, the city is constant black and filled with rain, obviously very reminiscent of classic noir. Vangelis score is often a slow jazzy style that is accompanied by synthesizers. Deckard, the hero of the film is actually an anti hero. A man who kills for a living, a man who finds himself drinking every night and a man who lacks a pure amount of emotion. The women of the story are played on noir stereotypes. Pris is identified as a “standard pleasure model.” Zhora finds herself performing a sexy snake dance in a dark night club. And Rachael is the femme fatale of the story who later becomes the love interest. Noir is also played on the clothing worn. Deckard sports a dress shirt and tie with a long trench coat (Gaff does same). Everyone else in the city streets wear futuristic attire you would expect from a film named “Blade Runner“. Deckard also holds his gun up as he lurks around dark corners. All very evocative of noir. The studio even went as far to demand a noir heavy voice over narration.
