Vocabulary List For First Semester

1.Biology: The science that employs the scientific method to study living things.
2.Theory: Well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observation.
3.Hypothesis: Possible explanation for a set of observations or possible answer to a scientific question.
4.Scientific Method:
      *state the problem
      *gather the known information
      *form a hypothesis
      *set up an experiment with a control
      *observe and record information
      *state conclusion.
5.Atomic Mass: Sum of protons and neutrons in an atom.
6.Nucleus: The center of the atom which contains the protons and neutrons. In cells, structure that contains the cell’s genetic material (DNA) and controls the cell’s activities.
7.Atom: Basic unit of matter
  Protrons: Positive charge
  Neutrons: Neutral charge
  Electrons: Negative charge
8.Atomic Number: The number of protrons any atom has, will determine what element it is.
9.Electron Shells: The shells outside of the atom that hold the electrons.
10.Valence Electrons: The electrons that are found in the outer shell surrounding an atom.
