For my Modernism project, I chose to attempt and create a portrait in the style of cubism.   The whole idea behind cubism was to eliminate any sense of depth perspective and curved lines.   The cubist painters, most recognizably Picasso and Braque, were the first to come up with this idea of eliminating the curved lines and instead replacing them with geometric figures and straight lines.   Their main goal was to throw the viewer’s sense of depth off and show them something completely new.   However, I am not Picasso, so it was difficult for me to create something as complex and incredible as an actual cubist portrait.   But I do feel that mine represents it somewhat due to the fact that no curved lines exist and the face has been replaced with straight lines and geometric figures.   The bright colors also added to another level to it, contrasting with the black and white shapes in the background.   My portrait could be considered modern because of the fact that it seems cubist.   Not full blown cubist, but if a viewer walked by I feel like they would be able to identify the portrait for what it was and notice the straight lines and geometric shapes.   The other main idea of the cubist painters was to not just capture an image from one perspective, but from several.   They were able toThey were able to show the image from multiple view points simultaneously, which is something extraordinary in itself.   This cubist movement was short lived, but provided artist with a sense of total creativity for that short period of time as well as influencing several other ism movements throughout the years to come.
