Beowulf vs. Socrates
Beowulf and Socrates are both very similar people. Comparitvely speaking, these are two people who deciced to act for the good of the people and not for his own sake. Although both go about it very differently, between the two, the general idea is that one should properly play his role in society for it to prosper. In Beowulf's case, he knew of his power and strength, he used it to protect and serve his country and those in need, to him he was only playing his role in society. Socrates shared his knowledge amongst the people to learn and grown. Socrates felt that if people were educated and asked more questions, society would work better as a whole. Socrates played his role in society, by questioning virute,government and the life around him. This idea also opened up others to question the same idea.
Throughout the poem, Beowulf clearly demonstrates his reasoning for acting of the good of the people. Beowulf states: “ Anything I can do, here on this earth, To earn your love, oh great king, anything more than I have done, battles I can fight In your honour, summon me, I will come as I came before” (Pg 80, 1822-1826). Beowulf believed that God had a plan for him, which can also be seen in the trial of Socrates. He proves his role in society, by defeating the 3 monsters, because he is the only one able to do such as task. Even when King Higlac offeres Beowulf the crown, he polifely declined, knowing at the time it was not his place to be king. Higlac’s widow Brought him the crown, offered him the kingdom, Not trusting Herdred, her son and Higlac’s, to beat off foreign invaders. But Beowulf Refused to rule when his lord’s son was alive, and the leaderless Geats could choose a rightful King (Pg.97, 2369-2374). Eventually Beowulf takes the crown and although his role changes from hero to king, the general idea is still intact. Beowulf is a man who demonstrates all the good qualities of a king, by letting his people live peacfully.
