In 1490 Leonardo da Vinci created the vitruvian man. The drawing is of a mans body with his arms and legs spread out inside a square. There is a circle on top of the square. He made it that way, because he thinks that symmetry and proportion are what makes something beautiful. Aristotle once said. “Beauty depends on size as well as symmetry”
Symmetry in nature is important in the characteristics of beauty. Female zebra finches prefer males with symmetric colorings. Female swallows prefer males with longer more symmetric tails. In nature, symmetric individuals have a higher mate value. Scientists say that the preference for symmetry is a highly evolved trait in many animals.
I personally do not believe that symmetry is what makes someone beautiful. I do agree that some beautiful people are symmetrical, but not necessarily all beautiful people are symmetrical. For my poster I chose Taylor swift. She is a very pretty singer, who before her songs came out, was no one. She did not have many friends and people did not find her that attractive. Now she has guys begging to date them. She is not symmetrical, her face and her leg measurements had high error percentages. That is an example of how symmetry does not make someone beautiful, in this case fame made her beautiful.
Humans all have different personalities, styles, and features, Some women prefer men that are strong, tan, and smart. Some men prefer tall, smart, sweet women. Studies have been done showing that people from different backgrounds generally liked the same people. Everyone has their own opinion and there are always some people who like different things then those general people. For example, some Chinese men prefer women with smaller feet. People from certain cultures prefer people that have baby features like smaller noses, ears, and mouths. Infants prefer looking at complex images and people.
