Be Yourself?


Almost weekly I am told, or hear the phrase, “be yourself.” This started puzzling me towards the end of middle school because it seemed to be very unclear and vague. I would find myself always asking the question, “How does one be themselves?!” In this paper I will attempt to find a way that can help a person to truly be himself or herself. Another way of looking at it, is asking, “How well do we know ourselves?” Throughout this paper I will discuss my thoughts and opinions on how a person can be or know himself or herself. I will also attempt to thoroughly explain my thought process on how I have come to the conclusions that I have. The last topic I will explore is a way of thinking that can be utilized for people to be and know themselves better. This will be quite challenging as I’m sure people have tried to achieve this for centuries. Who knows though, maybe a 19 year-old kid could at least come close to this goal!
In Timothy Wilson’s book, Strangers To Ourselves, he states, “ My central thesis is that human personality resides in two places: in the adaptive unconscious and in conscious construals of the self.”(72) I came to agree with this statement as soon as I saw it. I really haven’t researched much on human personality, but it has always been of great interest to me. This was a new thought that explained how two separate parts of our minds can contribute to one single being. He shows that the adaptive unconscious is an “adaptation for survival.” The thoughts and feelings that are contained in the adaptive unconscious cannot be made conscious. This helped broaden my knowledge of the conscious and unconscious much more thoroughly. He goes much more in depth into this theory and explains that the hard part of finding one’s self is getting into their unconscious.
