The movies that stay on my favorite list are the ones with sports, action/adventure, and comedy. You would think that most sports movies have just straight action and masculinity in it. Not in this case these two movies are inspirational in all aspects and are all about basketball. There is still a heavy amount of shooting and crossing on the court but off the court there’s a different feel to these movies.
The two movies I admired that had a balanced plot of action and inspiration were Coach Carter and Glory Road. These two movies have coaches who love a brutal practice. Coach Haskins and Coach Carter know that none of the players can take the pain but they have to because the coaches don’t tolerate any nonsense. In these movies there are obstacles that everyone has to face. For example how to adjust to new coaching methods, not being selfish, and getting along. But they all overcome it with a great deal of help from each other.
Coach carter is a movie based on a true story about a basketball coach and his team and what they face during the season. A more urban version of Hoosiers the movie brings out the challenges that players and Coach Carter face off the court. It all began with Ken Carter, who got himself out of poverty, returned to his tough high school to coach the basketball team. Old Coach White can’t manage the Richmond Oilers who is a selfish team looking to gain a little glory only given to serious players. Coach White can do nothing with the disrespectful crew, who plays every game as though it were a brawl waiting to happen. White asks Carter, whose success began with high school basketball, if he can come back and coach the team. Carter sees education as the best cure for the team. So Carter makes his players sign contracts committing them to maintaining a 2.3 GPA which is higher than the Board of Education mandated threshold for participation on the team.
