In November of 2008, America left another mark on history. The first African American was elected to the highest office and became the most powerful man in the western hemisphere. Upon his election, President Obama now faces many challenges within this country and our economy. Many people feel that he is the answer to all of our country’s problems. I disagree.
Another one of President Obama’s top priority issues, is to close Guantanamo Bay, which according to GlobalSecurity.org, is a prison operated by the Joint Task Force Guantanamo of the United States government founded in 1987 in Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, which is on the shore of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. This base has also been known as Gitmo. As of January 21, 2009, the trials at Gitmo, were suspended for 120 days, and the detention camp itself is to be shut down within the year. This detention camp has been the center of many allegations of abuse and humiliating acts, with which I do not agree. The question is, many of the inmates at this camp are clearly guilty of terroristic acts and cannot just be released. Even though there has been much talk about the closing of this detention camp, there has been no decision rendered on the fate of the inmates.
According to Propublica.org, which is an independent, non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism for the public interest, government bailouts totaling the amount of $1,369.9 billion were allotted to many corporationsin 2008. The United States Census Bureau estimates the population of the United States to be approximately 306,183,852. Based on those numbers alone, the government could have allotted $1 billion per American family. By doing so, mortgage debts would be able to be paid, new vehicles could be purchased, and the economy would flourish. The bailouts given to corporations would be essentially unecessary.
