Autism is often referred to as the “fastest growing developmental disability in the USA. Last month the outcome of a study issued by the federal centers for Disease Control and Prevention was released and had provided very scary statistics. The study found that New Jersey has the nation’s highest reported rate of autism in the country. The devastating disease effect one of out of every 94 children in the state, the national rate is one out of 150 children (AutismVox).
Current studies in Autism will not only help to broaden awareness but may aid in treatment of the disorder in educational settings. The study conducted by Kasari, Paparelli, Freeman and Jahromi, Language Outcome in Autism: Randomized comparison Of Joint Attention and Play Interventions, consisted of 58 children with autism between 3 and 4 years of age, 46 of the children were males which tend to be diagnosed more often. This study was provided in hopes of determining whether improving joint attention (JA) in young children with autism would improve their language development. The research was based in a hospital day-treatment early intervention program that consisted of 30 hrs of treatment per week. Children were randomly chosen for joint attention intervention or symbolic play intervention, and divided into control groups that were studied totaling 30 minutes daily for 5-6 weeks followed by prediction to language outcome 12 months later.
