Arthur Miller Gives Abigail No Redeeming Features
‘Arthur miller gives Abigail no redeeming features’. I agree with this statement as from reading and understanding the play, the reader quickly learns how evil and manipulative Abigail really is. Abigail Williams is the vehicle that drives the play. She is responsible for the mischief in the woods and when Parris discovers them, she tries to conceal her behavior, otherwise it will reveal her affair with proctor by her confessing to casting spells on Elizabeth. Abigail lies to hide this and to prevent the charges of witchcraft. In order to avoid severe punishment for casting spells and adultery, she cunningly shifts focus away from herself by accusing others of witchcraft. She is also very scheming as she uses her authority to create terror by threatening the girls with violence if they refuse to go along with her plans and won’t accuse them of witchcraft if their loyalty proves untrue.
Firstly, starting at act one, Abigail has already started bullying the girls into saying what she wants them to by frightening them. ‘Now look you, all of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters. And that is all. And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or an edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it.’ She is obviously the ringleader in many situations. Next, when she is alone with the man she most desires, Proctor, she immediately throws herself onto him. ‘Gah, I almost forgot how strong you are, John Proctor’. Unfortunately for Abigail, he does not return her love and gives her the cold shoulder. One of the most important parts of Act one is when Abigail gets jealous of the praise Tituba is receiving for confessing to having seen the devil after Abigail accuses her. ‘You have confessed yourself to witchcraft…we will bless you Tituba.’ Abigail quickly realizes declaring witchcraft gains you popularity and grants...
