*“This is kind of giving a secret away…” :* students’ perspectives on effective class management.   Donetta J. Cothran, Pamela Hodges Kullinna, Deborah A. Garrahy   (Teaching and Teacher Education Journal)   Introduction   Summary   The paper reveals four main components of creating a manageable classroom. The results from various interviews with students sum up these important aspects which involve: early expectations and consequences; relationships; care; and respect. Students expressed these issues as their opinions of an effective teacher. The reflection given by the students are based on their experience in encounters of different kinds of teachers.   It is an interesting idea when students expressed how a teacher’s early action may put affect on the classroom management. It is crucial for teachers to give a clear explanation on their rules and expectations in the beginning of the year. This is to set a guideline for the students to follow and be aware of the consequences of their behaviors. A teacher who fails to set rules on the first day of the lesson may face problems in managing the classroom in the following days. Giving explanations and clear consequences of students’ behavior will influence students in their actions. However, there are different ways in portraying these rules. Teachers are not expected to set a rule but later do not implement it. Students will feel that they are able to control the teacher instead of the other way round. Teachers are supposed to have the power over the students, and not the students who manipulate the teacher. A student will be able to perform this when the teacher is not consistent in giving rewards and punishments. As an example, a teacher may be manipulated by students when she or he usually gives pardon for misbehaviors when instead the rules were set that a certain punishment will be taken for a certain unwanted action.
