Animal Farm Corruption

McAndrew Mrs. Boatright English-3 22 November 2008 Animal Farm “All animals are created equal, but some animals are more equal than others (133).” In George Orwell’s, Animal Farm the animals of the manor farm band together and rebel against the owner of the farm, Mr. Jones. As the story progresses and the animals take over the farm and abolish Jones and his rules, they look to many different leaders to guide them through this journey. As history has proved, with the gaining of power comes the gain of corruption and greed. In Animal farm, George Orwell presents a variety of animals with different morals and values that make up a corrupt society through the development of Napoleon, Squealer, and Snowball. With the rise of a community always comes a leader, in Animal Farm Napoleon is the leader. George Orwell presents a common path that man takes in real life, with more power that the leader gains the more power the leader needs. Once Napoleon rises to absolute power he will do anything to gain more power, and he will also break many of the original Animalistic commandments just to benefit him and his needs. Napoleon is so focused on maintaining power that he resorts to spreading false propaganda about his old comrade Snowball, who was run off of the farm by Napoleon and his guard dogs. Anything that goes wrong on the farm is blamed on Snowball, who has not been seen since his exile. This shows the control that Napoleon had, he could basically say anything and the animals would believe him due to his constant spread of fear, false prophets, and talk of hope. Napoleon spread fear with the idea that Jones will one day return and try to take over the farm again, and if the animals don’t listen then Napoleon will give the farm over. He also spreads fear with the claim that whoever sides with snowball will be murdered. He also uses his dogs to scare people into siding with him.
