Hurricane Andrew In August 1992, the United States encountered one of the most damaging, deadly, powerful, and costly hurricanes ever. Going by the name Andrew, this hurricane was registered as a category 4 hurricane according to the Staffir/Simpson Hurricane Scale. It caused a total of 25 billion dollars in damage, the costliest in U.S. history, and brought some of the highest recorded wind speeds ever recorded for a hurricane. Hurricane Andrew will always be remembered by those that lived through the horrible storm and will be regarded by many as one of the most devastating weather occurrences the United States has and probably will ever experience. Originating off the coast of Africa as a tropical wave, Hurricane Andrew quickly developed from a tropical wave to a tropical storm, the first of the hurricane season of 1992. On August 16th the tropical wave officially became a tropical depression as reported by the National Hurricane Center. For most of the 16th and 17th the tropical depression was hindered by a very strong and deep easterly wind sheer. However by late day on August 17th around 1200 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) the depression strengthened to Tropical Storm classification and was officially named “Andrew”. Andrew attained Hurricane strength on August 22nd after having its strength and direction affected by multiple barrages of high and low pressure troughs as well as multiple occurrences of wind sheer. Andrew was the first Atlantic hurricane in more than two years to have developed from a tropical wave. Just 36 hours after reaching Hurricane strength, Andrew was classified on the borderline of a category 4 and 5 level hurricane. The overall pressure of the storm dropped an astonishing 92 mb to 922 mb giving the rare occurrence of what is called a rapid deepening.
