Am I Happy?
Who gets to decide whether I am happy or not? Should I care if another person does not feel I have reached my true potential? There are so many different paths life can take a person and uncontrollable circumstances whether fortunate or unfortunate that can arise. Therefore is it fair for an outside person looking in to be able to judge if meeting my own personal goals based on my situation are good enough for me to be a happy person? This conflict depends on whether you believe in the subjectivist or objectivist view of happiness. My belief is that only the individual can decide what objective they want to pursue out of life and only they know what will make them happy.
The subjective conception would be the one most fitting for my view. In this idea each individual decides for themselves what target point they want to reach in life but does not necessarily mean that their target has to be their highest potential possible. They could just want to own a car and live out of their car being able to take all of their belongings with them where ever they go. With the subjective approach on happiness they would be considered happy since they are able to complete the goal they set out for themselves of always having all of their possessions with them no matter where the go. Richard Kraut made it clear when he stated “the subjectivist thinks your current goals fix the standpoint from which your life should be evaluated” (Happiness, “Two Conceptions of Happiness”, p. 211). Another person may desire to be a respected leader and ends up becoming an executive manager at a company. To his face all the employees praise him for what a wonderful job he has done for the company, but behind his back they all feel he is worthless and only got the job because of nepotism.
