Achilles
In the Greek’s history the definition of a hero is different then what we think it means now. The definition of a hero then is a man of great strength and courage, favored by the gods, often regarded as a half god and is worshiped after his death.
There were a lot of heroes that that we have never heard of, but we haven’t heard of many of them. There were two great heroes and they were Achilles of Greece, and Hector of Troy. Achilles was the best and the mightiest warrior of the Greek army, and Hector was the army leader of the Trojans. Out of these two great heroes there can only be one that can be the best. The one that I think is the greatest hero is Achilles. Achilles was the son of Thetis a sea goddess, and for being a half god he had their favor. The reason the Achilles is the greatest is that he was the one that killed Hector in a one on one battle.
There are a lot of heroic traits the Achilles possesses. As said in the “Iliad” Achilles was enraged when hector killed his best friend, Patroclus, after Achilles said he could go and fight for him. Even though Achilles knew his death would come shortly after he killed hector from his mother. He had enough courage to still go after to kill hector to avenge Patroclus’s death (201). Achilles was a quick and fast warrior as told in the story that he was a “swift racer like a hound chasing a fawn from its lair” (203). He was an honorable man. After Priam’s sons’ death according to the story, Priam snuck into the enemy’s camp to talk to Achilles. Priam came to Achilles he begged him to let him give the dead Prince Hector, royal honors, and a burial (220). Achilles was also a strong leader. He didn’t want to go to war and have his men die for one woman that was stolen from Agamemnon.
