A Communication Strategy
A COMMUNICATION STRATEGY TO IMPROVE SHIP’S PREVENTIVE
MAINTENANCE IN COPESA FISHING COMPANY
Abstract
The use of communication to improve Preventive Maintenance (PM) performed on fishing vessels of COPESA Company, was researched. The Design Authority wants to decrease the failures due to lack of PM so it needs to communicate effectively to the Operators the convenience of the fulfillment of the PM policies.
I Introduction
COPESA has 33 units to serving along the coast of the country and primary mission imposed by the Owners is to have a high availability of these units in order the associated commercial activity (fishing) is enhanced.
These ships, distributed at 11 different fishing areas, throughout 4.500 kms. of coast, cannot count on the support of a single repair workshop, so their availability is strongly dependant on the timely and well done PM performed by the crew of each vessel. Design Authority stated that many failures affecting systems availability could have been avoided if PM had been accomplished according to what is stated.
The nature of the vessel’s missions makes that the activity is un-programmed in a high percentage (70%) so it is hard for the Operator to allocate enough time to the crew to plan and perform PM activities as required.
When this issue was analyzed with the Design Authority representatives they said that the problem concerning the failures due to lack of PM was an important matter to be solved. This research was important not only for the Design Authority but also for the Operators, because if the diagnosis (or pre-diagnosis) was true it should be possible to improve the systems PM and consequently their availability.
The hypothesis is whether a communication strategy can be used to improve the PM.
The question to be answered is:
Can a communication strategy be used to improve the PM on fishing vessels?
First we need to answer the following two sub questions:
What is PM?
Why PM is...
