A Child Called It
In David Pelzer’s A Child Called It, you find yourself engaged in an emotional roller coaster. This book is not only based on his life, but how he managed to survive his abusive mother and come to find himself in foster care. David was abused severely, not only physically but emotionally. Its so difficult to accept what happened to this young innocent boy for no reason. His mother singled him out of the family and treated him so badly compared to his two other brothers who she treated so well. Child abuse is a terrible thing, but is very common in this world today.
The outside world does nothing to help out a small child suffering from various forms of abuse. The few people who took notice were David's teachers and the school nurse. Yet it took them a considerable amount of time to finally build up suspicion and finally report Dave's problems to the proper people. I believe we need to notice more things going on around us. And help the helpless. David was too afraid. This is how his mother speaks to him. "Well aren't you special...get one thing straight you little [SOB]. There is nothing you can do to impress me! Do you understand me? You are a nobody, an "It!" You are nonexistent! You are a bastard child! I hate you and I wish you were dead! Dead! Do you hear me? Dead!"
His relationship with his brothers is not very close either. They do not care much for him because they know what’s going on with him and what he is going through but they do not feel sorrow for him and they do not try and help. This is a scene in the book. "After the boys had carved their pumpkins, I could hear mother, in her soothing voice, telling them a scary story. The more I heard, the more I hated each and every one of them. It was bad enough waiting, like a dog, out in the backyard on the rocks while they enjoyed dinner, but having to lay in a cold bathtub, shivering to keep warm, while they ate popcorn and listened to mothers' tale made me want to scream."
