1. Atticus’ character
• “. . but I had never heard of or seen anyone quarrel with Atticus.” (Pg.137): This is quoted by Scout about Atticus and his friendly nature.
• “Atticus was feeble: he was nearly fifty.” (Pg.89): Said by Scout about Atticus’ age.
• “I saw that, One-Shot Finch!” (Pg.97): Said by Miss Maudie to Atticus. Atticus had just shot Tim Johnson, the mad dog. Atticus had not shot a rifle in 30 years.
• “Of course I do. Don’t say nigger, Scout. That’s common.” (Pg.75): Said by Atticus to Scout when Scout asks him if he defends niggers. This shows Atticus is not racist.
• “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.” (Pg.76): Said by Atticus to Scout when Scout asks him if he is going to win the Tom Robinson case. This shows Atticus is optimistic.
2. Scout’s character
• “. . It would be many years before I would be interested in boys, I would never be interested in clothes . . . but I kept quiet.” (Pg.127): Quoted by Scout when Aunt Alexandra came to visit to teach her to be more feminine.
• “My fists were clenched and I was ready to let fly.” (Pg.74): Thoughts of Scout when she encounters Cecil Jacobs after he said Atticus defends niggers.
• “Teach me? He hasn’t taught me anything, Miss Caroline.” (Pg.17): Said by Scout to Miss Caroline when Miss Caroline asks her who taught her to read.
3. Jem’s character
• “In addition to Jem’s newly developed characteristics, he had acquired a maddening air of wisdom.” (Pg.116): Quoted by Scout, talking about Jem’s intelligence and wisdom.
• “He stood there until nightfall, and I waited for him. When we went in the house I saw he had been crying. . .” (Pg.63): Scouts thoughts about Jem after Jem finds out the tree that connected the children with Boo Radley was filled with cement by Nathan Radley. This shows that Jem is compassionate and intelligent.
