1984 Opinion
Are Facts Reality? What would Americans do if one day they woke up and the media had vanished? There would be no more breaking news, public opinion on government actions, nor any synopsis of the day’sevents. Would Americans survive having to think on their own? In George Orwell’s 1984, the party members are hand fed everything that they are suppose to think, say, and do. Is this the type of society that America is coming to? The power of the media in 1984is incredible. One day Oceania is at war with Eastasia and the next day it is at war with Eurasia, and no one notices. Winston is amazed when a man is handed a paper during his speech telling him the enemy they are at war with has changed. The speaker “had switched from one line to the other actually in mid-sentence, not only without a pause, but without even breaking the syntax” (181). No one in the crowd reacted either. It was merely stated that Goldstein had been at work and had hung up all of the wrong posters. Is America heading down this path, where an enemy can instantly become an ally without anyone noticing or caring? Has America been brainwashed? Another aspect that shows America’s decline towards the society of Oceania is everyone believing whatever is said as truth. In Oceania, the enemy of the party is the Brotherhood and Goldstein. At one point in the book, Winston asks “Does the Brotherhood exist [sic]” (260). How is Winston suppose to be sure that they have not made this enemy up? Although O’brien ignores the question, it is a vital point in society. America desperately needs to begin asking this question with everything that they are presented with as truth. Americans automatically believe everything is true if it is said on tv. However, in order for America to reverse its direction on this dangerous path, the people need to begin to question “the facts” that are being told to them.
