Anti Bullying Speech Example
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me,” or at least that’s what they tell us as we grow up. The unfortunate truth is, words are deadly. Every day at school cruel words assault kids in all grades. Usually they don’t intend to make such an impact on the kids they beat down daily. The effects of these verbal attacks go unnoticed far too often by the attackers. There isn’t any quick solution for this. As Shane Koyczan stated in his poem “To This Day”, “seems like every school has an arsenal of names getting updated every year.” Words are a leading cause to lasting emotional damage among kids. Thinking before we speak can make all the difference in somebody’s day, or even their life. Many people don’t believe what they say or do really does make an impact on others. To show you why this isn’t true, I have my own story, and someone else’s. It began in first grade for me. I had just moved to Beverly from Maine, and I was starting at a new, preppy school. The other students were as smoothly ironed as the uniforms they wore. This wasn’t somewhere I could fit into well. My only friend there, Ben, tried to protect and distract me but they attacked him too. I can’t recall the names they called us since I tried to block them out, but I remember how it hurt. I remember the nights I spent crying, and the days I begged to stay home. In Shane Koyczan’s poem he says, “we stayed inside for recess because outside was worse.” This was true for me too. If I tried to go outside, I wouldn’t hear friends calling my name. I would hear classmates reminding me that only stupid people needed tutors or I would be picked last in gym again. The days my only friend convinced his parents to let him stay home were the worst for me. Those were the days I had to run inside to avoid being kicked or pushed down again. This was the beginning to 6 more years of bullying.
