The Meeting

"You better behave yourself and make Mark like you or else, prepare to pack up your trash and get ready to move onto the cold, dirty streets!" The threatening voice stroke her brain cells and reminded her of why she was here. "Can you believe it? The Darcys have agreed on the blind date!" Her step mother had jumped up and down and had completely forgotten about her 'lady' image after receiving a call. "I don't want to go!" If it was possible, she wished she could shout out her real thoughts but it has only been a wish which she has been praying for ever since she was the age of five after she entered those merciless eyes of her step mother. When she was little, she used to hide in a corner where no one could find her and dream of a happy family. In that family, there was a kind father, a loving mother and an adorable little sister who she could play with while their parents were out. But as time passed by, she no longer fantasised about the fairy tails. And yes, she had to admit that although she was already 23 years old, she still had to live under the will of her parents, or maybe the name 'guardians' would be more suitable. In order to adapt to the environment she had been brought up in, where she was snubbed by her cold-hearted father and mistreated by her step mother who sees nothing but money, she has learnt to keep her thoughts to herself and obey to those words because no one could predict which day she would end up in a body of scars. And that was the reason she was right here, standing in front of this luxurious French restaurant which she has admired and only seen on television. She entered the restaurant with her guardians. The well-mannered waiter led their way across the people and entered the VIP room through the silent, empty narrow hallway. And there they were, sat an aging but kind-looking couple and a young man around the age of 30 - the Darcys. She has never had nor allowed to think or to have interests in men but

The meeting of which Miss Bingley alluded to in the opening sentence of her letter, addressed to the eldest Miss Bennet, was taking place as planned at Mr. Hurst's house in Grosvenor Street. The home was all that a home of persons in the position of the Hurst's should be, and the dining room made a very pleasing place to have a dinner party. The group of two, Mr. Darcy and Miss. Bingley, was welcomed heartily by the Hursts and by application of the guests, Mr. Bingley was also called for, to join them in having dinner that evening. Such a sudden removal from Hertfordshire the previous day by Mr. Darcy and Miss Bingley was the focus of many questions which were quickly ended by the curt response they were met with. The only real explanation was a desire to converse with Mr. Bingley on a matter with so serious a nature to prompt them quitting Netherfield and joining with him in London as quickly as possible.…

It took me about ten minutes to convince her that I wasn’t there to harm her. She said she had been captured and sent to a camp but had managed to slip away last night. We had both stumbled into the cave by dumb luck—or, maybe, fate. I explained to her that if we waited until night, we could sneak back to the base, and maybe she could start fresh in America. She agreed; anything was better than her life here.…

Love, itself, is a complex idea to comprehend and understand. People in today’s society might believe they know the ins and outs of love but realistically they most likely do not. In Raymond Carver’s “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love”, Carver communicates to the reader what each character’s thoughts toward love are sub-textually through Terri’s complicated relationship with her ex husband, Nick’s few comments relating to the conversation, and Mel’s backwards idea that he is a “knight of love”, despite what they communicate literally. Even though the characters in the story claim they have a clear grasp on what love is, as each character attempts to explain to each other what they believe it is, Carver displays that the characters really do not have as clear of a grasp as they thought they did.…

I wandered down the stairs of our house to my grandmother’s bedroom. Emma Mae Wilder-White, my mother’s mother, was my best friend. I could tell her anything and she would still love me. As I turned the knob to her room, the voices in my head grew shriller and louder until I felt I was drowning in sound. Die, die, die. You’re worthless, no good. Do it now, not later. I staggered into the living room and collapsed in the floor.…
