In the recent past, there has been controversy regarding the role women in the military. Historically, the role of women in the military has been reduced to simple roles such as cleaning and cooking (Neighbour, n.d). However, current debate has centered on the aspect of gender equality where it has been argued both military men and women should perform similar roles and duties in the military. Specifically, some have argued that military women should be allowed to fight on the frontline. This essay argues that indeed military women deserve to fight in frontlines during war. First, women make up a significant percentage of the military personnel in many countries today. In the United States for example, women account for almost 14% of the total military personnel (Moore, 2013). Considering these numbers, women need to be given the opportunity to actively defend their country, just like men. A country does not belong to men alone. Both sexes should be given the chance to participate in building and protecting their county, including fighting on the frontline. There is the concept of patriotism where women should be allowed to do something for the country as a sign of patriotism. Women may want to defend their territory because it is their patriotic ‘obligation’ to do so. By serving on the frontline, women will have the opportunity to demonstrate that they are indeed capable of serving in roles just like the men. Second, women serving in the military deserve to achieve something in their military careers. Therefore, allowing women to serve on the frontline will ensure that they earn that sense of achievement.
