Why were the colonies established?
Colonies were established cause of various reasons.The most important reasons of colonization were religion, economics, and government. The 13 colonies were based on land grant lines given to various nobles and wealthy people or groups by the English royalty.The original thirteen colonies were Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia.
The New England colonies were Rhode Island,Connecticut,Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Rhode Island was the 1st to declare independence from England but last of thirteen to become a state because of concerns over being fairly represented in spite of size.Connecticut was settled by Puritans from Massachusetts; state laws were model for US Constitution.It was the 5th to become a state. Massachusetts was founded in 1630 by John Winthrop. Massachusetts was established through the efforts of a commercial agreement with the Pilgrims. New hampshire was named for Hampshire County in England.It became a state in 1788.
The Middle Colonies were Delaware,Pennsylvania,New York and New Jersey.Delaware was the1st state. Pennsylvania means Penn's Woods, named for William Penn.New York was given to King Charles 2nd's brother, The Duke of York.It became a state in 1788. New Jersey was originally settled by Swiss and Dutch.
The Souther Colonies were Maryland,Virginia,North and South Carolina and Georgia.Maryland was Named for Queen Henrietta Maria of England. Virginia was a a Royal colony . It was named after Queen Elizabeth because she was a virgin queen. North and South Carolina began as proprietary colonies given to several Aristocrats from England. Georgia was named afterKing George II.It was the last colony settled but was 4th to ratify Constitution and become a state.
