What Is Gratitude
What is gratitude; there are many of definitions to define this word. Some of these definitions are the emotion that arises from multiple sources, including general appreciation of other people in one’s life. Another definition is the appreciation of nature and the world. Another one is to focus on the personal benefits and positive circumstances, and finally the aspects of interpersonal relationships and transactions. We know that feeling and expressing gratitude is a good thing. But what needs to happen inside us so that we’re more mindful and present for the experience of gratitude? How can the experience of gratitude open us to life more deeply and connect us more intimately with each other?

There are four steps to a deeper gratitude. They are recognizing, relaxing and receiving, relishing, and responding. First, there is recognizing. Gratitude is a sense of appreciation for the good things that meander our way. It begins by recognizing that something happened just then. Someone commented on our kindness or perceptiveness. We received a kind word about something we wrote or a project we completed, or someone holds open a door and flashes a warm smile as we walk in. That’s all recognizing the simple little things. The second step is relaxing and receiving. Most of us are not very skilled at receiving a gift, compliment, smile or hug. We might feel that we don’t really deserve it or they really knew us, they wouldn’t be so kind or responsive. Shame may clog our receptors, making us unavailable to receive graciously. Disallowing ourselves to receive is actually a form of narcissism. Rather than receive gracefully thereby signaling to the giver that their kindness touched us in some way, we divert our eyes, shut down, or dismiss it. Our self-referential thoughts, fears, and insecurities keep us preoccupied in a world that does not allow an easy flow of giving and receiving. The third step of gratitude is relishing. What is relishing?

David Steindl-Rast gave an interesting TED talk on how gratefulness leads to happiness. Something that really stuck out to me was people who have experienced misfortunes are still able to be happy because they are grateful. Many people lead depressed lives because they dwell on their misfortunes. I find this quite sad, especially because I really want to spread happiness. Another part that fascinated me was when Steindl explained that within every new moment we are given a new opportunity, or a gift. He also stated that most people need to stop and see the opportunity in order to be grateful. This made me realize that I need to slow down more often and really take in account how lucky I am. There was an easy three step process he explained…

I think that my attitude about gratitude is very important. Over the past couple weeks, I have been assingned to write about what I am grateful for or something good that has happened to me that day. I think that this has really truly strengthed my health in a lot of ways. I used to think that I wasn’t that wealthy. I used to think that everyone has more than me. I have had a talk about this with my parents and they have said that you should be so grateful for what you have. I have been thinking about this lately and its really got to me. I have read an article that there was a group of kids. Someone asked all of them to write down what they were thankful for each day. Some of the kids did it and some didn’t. it turns out that the ones who did it were the most happy. They were so happy and cheerful rather than the other kids who did not appreciate all that they had. They think that they should just be automatically given that stuff. If you think like that you will never be happy. I have learned from experience. When you are grateful for everything you are happy about everything. If you are happy about everything, then it can effect you entire health. Mentally and Socially. Just like we have gotten to write in a gratitude journal, that is practicing for many things. In my article, it says “people that have gratitude tend to be more creative, bounce back more quickly from adversity, have a stronger immune system, and have stronger social relationships than those who don’t practice gratitude. I think this totally true and I agree with it. In the end, being grateful makes you feel so amazing and happy.…

As Brooks says, “When was the last time you were grateful for the spots on a trout?” (Brooks 5)The first small thing I am thankful for is color. Without color life would be so boring to just be in all black and white all the time. Color shows creativity and individuality. Another thing I am grateful for is dishwashers. Dishwashers have made my life so much easier. When dishes are my chore for the week I can just load and unload the dishwasher opposed to having to hand wash every single dish that had been used. Flash drives are also a big life savor. I never thought to be grateful for them before this assignment. I chose now to be grateful because I have all my pictures saved on a flash drive. If I were to lose that I would lose not only all my pictures, but all the memories that go along with them. Being appreciative for the little things can make you so much happier. Once one realizes that they will notice all the little things that make life a whole lot easier and help in the simplest…

Appreciation is an emotion that is not always displayed when necessary. People seldom show how much they appreciate ones words or action. When you appreciate something you show your gratitude in word form such as thank you or maybe even in the form of some type of gift or card. There are many ways to say you appreciate something or someone but for some reason in our society appreciation isn't shown as much as it should be. People seem to take peoples kindness as a given instead of something they should be thankful for. Even small gestures such as holding the door for the person behind you should be thanked. It seems like a small deed but did that person really have to hold the door for you? They did not, so shouldn't you therefore take the time to say thank you? Yes you should.…

Generosity, compassion is a act of kindness, given from your heart and not expecting anything in return. My best friend was going through a really rough time at her residents with her family, so I offered her to stay with me because shes family and my eyes also, if the shoe was on the other foot she would do the same. When i surprise people or just want to see a smile on there face I choose random days, No birthday or holidays because it's a dead give away its expected. So after high school I moved to Tallahasse Florida where I stayed with my cousin Maze. My mother supported me I had no job and sometimes I would go over my budget with her credit card, I was a little irritated every time I would swipe her card she would call and question me about what I spent the money on, which she had every right to do. In between time I got hired at the mall no one knew, I wanted it to be a secret into I knew for sure that I had my foot in the door. Randomly I started sending my mother cards with poems and money thanking her for everything she has done and still does for me and that I appreciate an is willing to give back and express how I feel to her so that we can bond and build our relationship as mother and daughter. With me doing good deeds for my mother and and friends made me want to give back to the community and families that are that are less fortunate. I was feeling in powered by the way I felt spiritually I was floating on the clouds of kindness. I started reaching out more to my grandparents, nephews and cousins that I never meet, so I set up a date for a cook out at my grandmothers to talk to my family and let them know that I love each and everyone of them and I thank them for there support with holding our family together sticking through the rough…

To be thankful is to be conscious of the benefit they have received. Too many people take things for granted. Many people believe that things come for a reason or that they come because you want them. Hard work goes into getting those things and when you get them some rarely thank the individual. Thankfulness is more than saying “thank you” it’s being happy with what you have, what you or others are able to provide for you. Not wanting more than you already have. From experiences I have been deemed as an unthankful person not being gracious for what I have. I am always told that kids elsewhere have it worse off than I do and they are happy with what they have. I don’t think I’ve ever thanked my parents for putting food on the table or buying me clothes. I found it as something expected that they would just do because they were my parents. As I get older I realize the work and effort put in by parents to provide for their kids. Just saying “thank-you” goes a long way with some people because they know that you are acknowledging what they have done for you.…

I believe that kindness is one of the most important human characteristics. It is not that hard to say a simple 'thank you', and yet it can really change the outlook of someone else's day. My sister once told me “It takes more muscles to frown than to smile.” I have noticed that just being polite to the people around you can really make the atmosphere around you more positive. I can think of a lot of examples of when being polite has made things a little smoother, including one at the doctor's office. As I was heading to my appointment at the doctor's office, I entered an elevator to go to the third floor where my doctor's office is located. As I entered the elevator I pressed the button and waited for the door to close. I was running a few minutes late and I was a little concerned that I would not make my appointment in time. I noticed an old man enter the building and slowly make his way to the elevator. Instead of allowing the elevator door to close on the old mans shrivled body I generously steped in and help the old man out instead of turning my head and proceding to my much anticipated appointment. I belive that any act of kindness doesn’t go unnoticed “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted” this is a quote by Aesop a very inspirational author who has influenced my life by trying to help others out. So everyday you should try and do atleast one act of kindness in hope that that person will pass it on so I would like to share a very inspirational quote “Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end” (Scott…

However, some people forget that only Allah can make people happy, treat them with respect, offer them good sustenance and blessings, create pleasing views for them, grant them a new lease on life every morning, protect them from all dangers, cure them when they are ill, ease their pain and suffering through medicine, and that He owns everything that exists. Therefore, as all of the blessings and goodness that people experience come only from Allah, they should direct all of their love, respect, sense of obligation, loyalty, and thanks to Him. While thanking others for their help, we should never forget that our Lord has inspired them to show us mercy and help us. Allah informs us that:…
