What Is an Argument
In Humanities 101, I learned what the meaning of an argument was along with the term valid and sound argument. Many people might have their own opinion on what an argument is but in Humanities an argument is a list of reasons that fit together in a particular way to support some conclusion. In everyday situations, when two people have an argument, it means they disagree about something, but in this case argument means dispute. An argument is mostly used in politics. When it comes to what a valid argument is and what a sound argument is confusion begin to arise because they both are similar in a way. A valid argument is an argument whose conclusion follows its premise. When it comes to a valid argument it can have true or false premises and conclusions. A sound argument is a little simpler to detect then a valid argument because it is a valid argument with true premises. So, if all the premises are true it is a sound argument. A great example of a sound argument is: (A.) All birds can fly. (B.) A penguin is a bird. (C.) A penguin can fly. This is a valid argument, because a penguin clearly cannot fly. The premise all birds can fly is false. Another example of a valid argument that is not sound is: (A.) All mammals are human. (B.) My cat is a mammal. (C.)My cat is a human. This is a valid argument, because a cat clearly isn’t a human meaning the premise all mammals are human is false. In conclusion we learned in class the difference and similarities between an argument, a valid argument, and a sound

What is the best solution to a more successful future? This question is in the minds of many students and parents. In my opinion, I think that attending a public school is a better solution than attending a private school. This choice is affected greatly by the overall performance, capabilities of the student and the financial budget of the parent. There are advantages and disadvantages of both private and public schools.…

In the world today, the word “argument” is used on a daily basis and usually carries a bad meaning. In fact, the word is used so much that people often mistaken it’s true meaning. According to the book Writing Arguments by John Ramage, John Bean and June Johnson, there is no universally accepted definition of “argument.” The meaning of the term is rather complex, and it has been remained a controversial issue of philosophers and rhetoricians over the centuries (2). Because of the complexity of the word, we need to examine three important points in order to understand what “argument” truly meant: the misconceptions about the meaning of argument, the features of argument, and the relationship of argument to the problem of truth.…

Arguments based on emotion work in different media by getting the audience to feel a sense of what the advertiser is trying to convey. The effectiveness of these arguments differ based on the promoter and what they are trying to present. For example, if the promoter is trying to get a message across through a book, they have to include something that might interest readers. Unlike books, if they are trying to advertise something through television, they include something that might interest people who like watching T.V., such as “couch potatoes” etc. The approach for magazines is different. If someone is already reading a magazine they are in for ads therefore it is much easier to grab their attention. However, arguments based on emotion vary significantly on websites. You can go from a positive response to an extremely negative response in a few seconds, therefore you must be careful. Certain things an ad might portray may go against what someone believes and will instigate “hate” comments which technically may not deserve that type of classification. Others may be able to receive the emotion the ad is trying to present and therefore the ad can be successful. Newspapers are an emotionally colder source than television news in my perspective because when you are watching the news, the reporters can sound a little enthusiastic, delivering the news in a hopeful manner. When reading the newspaper, you can only interpret it how you envision it and so if the tone of the paper is depressing, then it would be emotionally colder.…

The prices of college tuition have increased yearly, and not much of an effort is put forth to try to lower the costs. For example, colleges in the state of Pennsylvania have a high tuition. Moravian College’s tuition is about $32,931, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $22,900. East Stroudsburg University’s tuition is about $6,240, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $12,500. I can barely afford Community College, and I know for a fact I wouldn’t be able to afford any of these colleges or universities either. In this essay, I will explain through facts and opinions, why the cost of college tuition should be lowered.…

I stopped by a corner store when I got into an argument with a man robbing the store. I woke up one beautiful hot summer day and decided to enjoy it by skateboarding. I decided to go to a local skate park and skate with some of my buddies. After a long day of skating I decided to call it a day and head home, looking forward to opening the fridge. I was on my way home, passed by a small corner store and decided to go in for a drink. As I entered the store I noticed a man holding a knife on one the customers and the cashier was a young girl scared out of her mind. The man looked desperate and I didn’t want anyone to get hurt, so maybe I can reason with him. I told the man to “let the man go, nobody has to get hurt” but he was scared and seemed to be on the drugs and shouted back “no! Nobodies leaving until I get the money.” I tried talking to him calmly so he wouldn’t do anything he’ll regret. I said to him, “look, there are cameras here and your face and as well as our faces are on there , if someone gets hurt its going to go a lot worse for you.” He said, “I don’t care who gets hurt! Give me the money or this man is going to feel a lot of pain.” I said, “Okay let him go first and then you can have the money!” He replied, “No! Give me the money first and then I’ll let him go.” The cashier then took the money from the register and handed it to the robber and he grabbed it, he then ran out of the door and it was over. After a long day of skating I decide to stop by a corner store and get into an argument with a robber, in a life and death situation.…
