(Using ABC to improve product pricing) Answer the four questions posed in the case. Include in your answer the basic differences between volume based (traditional) overhead application procedures and the ABC method.
Case Study
Computation of gross profit margin for each product based on ABC data
(A) Partiulars GS-157 HS-241 OS-367
Selling Price per Unit $19.30 $17.50 $15.10
ABC Cost per Unit $12.50 $11.67 $13.75
Gross Profit per Unit $6.80 $5.83 $1.35
Units Produced and Sold $120,000 $90,000 $40,000
Gross Profit $816,400 $524,700 $54,000
(B) A good example of how ABC systems are better than the traditional costing systems is represented in the case of Hammer Products, Inc. In order to compare them, we first need to calculate the total cost per unit under each costing system, and then determine how much money each product will generate; also known as profit margin per unit. The first step to compute the total cost per unit under the traditional costing system is to determine the predetermined overhead rate that will be used in calculating the manufacturing overhead per unit. As shown in exhibit1, the predetermined overhead rate is obtained by dividing the total estimated manufacturing overhead cost for the year by the total estimated number of hours applied to production. In this case, the predetermined overhead rate turned out to be $48dlh; which means that for every hour spent on the production of these products, $48 will be applied to manufacturing overhead. Once the predetermined overhead rate is determined, we can figure out how much money has been applied to each, single unit of production by multiplying the predetermined overhead rate by the number of direct labor hours that it took to produce each unit. Then, if we add the direct materials and direct labor amounts that were previously given to the manufacturing

The assignment of the manufacturing costs (manufacturing towels, customising and other factory overhead) towards product groups will be taken as a given and will not be re-allocated because the company has full confidence in the accuracy of these figures. However, in order to reveal the true profitability of the three customer accounts we will examine & re-allocate the costs regarding selling and administrative expenses towards the customer groups. We will use for this the ABC approach. The steps to take in ABC analysis are the following ones [Slagmulder, 2010]: 1. Identify the key activities…

Describe how a CIRT plan helps an organization mitigate risk. A CIRT plan helps an organization mitigate risk by helping the organization prepare for incidents. This allows for the company to respond to a problem quicker than they would without a plan. One of the most important benefits to the plan is the naming of a CIR team and what their responsibilities are. This allows for the organization to train the team for what skills are needed to help the company when the problem arises. Without a plan the team does not gain the benefit to analyze the response so they will not know how to correctly fix the problem.…

The 2 articles I had chosen are on Blackfish and Sea World. The first title is called SeaWorld Questions Ethics of ‘Blackfish’ Investigator. I always thought that there was no doubt in my mind that Sea World was a good place that was until the movie Blackfish came out. This first article is about questioning the ethics that the investigator used to gain his insight on the killer whales that he used for the movie. I feel like this is not a good creditable source because there are many bias issues at hand which tends to lean towards one side which in this article is Sea world. How I can to this decision is the facts at hand which Sea world is only showing their side at hand. To think one sided is very bias because they want the reader to think they are right. The article reveled to me that Sea World has something to hide when they can’t explain why they think that all the investigators information is wrong. With no substantial evidence and/ or qualified personnel.…

Values are a set of personal and cultural ethics that are consistent with a well running society having an amoral code. Furthermore, values are the determining factor of every kind of social behavior that affects interactions with other people and themselves. Theoretically, it comes down to values determining the factor and guidelines for the social ideologies and attitudes on one hand, and effects of social behavior on the other. The study of values in the social sciences of consumer behavior began in the 1930’s, but did not receive that much traction until the late 1970’s (Ibe, King, Ling, Min, & Yii, 2015). Companies now more than ever are able to utilize technology to be able to one ensure that the company’s values and ethics are readily available to their employees and two technologies provide tools for managers to enforce company policies in relation to ethics. Companies use tools such as Microsoft Share point as well as an internal Intranet for posting its values and ethics making them easy to find as well as tools for understanding them. By doing so the company can then ensure that there isn 't really any excuse that can be used for not being aware of the ethics and therefore create a zero tolerance for ethical violations by its employees. Technology provides several tools for managers to be able to monitor their employees use of internet; since many companies are opening up the use of the internet at work finding value in allowing their employees to use the internet especially social media while at work have to ensure that the usage is within the compliance of the companies values. Some of these tools range from having each employee sign a user agreement during the initial hiring process making it clear up front what type of usage is appropriate and spelling out what are clear violations of the usage policy. IT departments today are able to put into place system that will monitor and alert them to a user that may have either intentionally or unintentionally have ended up at a web site that would contain content that violates the companies ethical standards. When this happens typically the companies monitoring software will warn the individual that this site is not approved for use at work as well as send a message to their manager letting them know there has been a website accessed that isn 't appropriate. This then gives the manager the opportunity to talk with the employee and establish if the site is truly inappropriate at work or if the user…
