People with Learning disabilities were being locked in an unheated, unventilated “quiet room” overnight. One of the worst incidents of abuse of vulnerable adults in residential care. Seven people were involved, four men and three women. One of the alleged victims was previously subjected to horrific abuse at Bristol’s Winterbourne view private hospital. The vulnerable man was transferred over 100 miles away to Veilstone Care home, Bideford, Devon. Only to be abused again…
Alison Millar (specialist lawyer in abuse claims) from law firm Leigh Day said “The allegations we have heard, make us believe this could be one of the worst incidents of abuse towards vulnerable adults in residential care and, moreover, than the abuse at Winterbourne view… It was not just an isolated occurrence, but a symptom of a more systematic problem in the care sector.”
Detective inspector White said “Throughout the investigation, the safety, welfare and protection of vulnerable adults has been and remains the absolute priority of all the organisations involved. Due to the nature of the enquiry and complex needs of the victims, this investigation will take many months. Throughout this time, the police will continue to work closely with all agencies involved and the victims and families of those affected will receive ongoing support.”
The company was part of the Atlas project team ltd, which no longer exists for obvious reasons. The seven members of staff have either been jailed or have been given a suspended sentence.
Angela, a 57 year old woman who lived in Bideford her whole life said “The things that have taken place in that home are absolutely disgusting. To think it’s been happening on my very own doorstep for god knows how long. Really is appalling.”
Mark, 25 from bath said “I can’t believe there’s repeats of what happened at Winterbourne, I really can’t. To think people actually do that! I hope they get put away for a very long time.”
