USE 0F SEMINARS AND TUTORIALS AS A STUDY STRATEGY
SEMINAR
A seminar is a small group meeting in which students and tutors discuss information on a chosen topic. They provide opportunity to explore topics by discussion and to identify and sort out any problem.
It’s a teaching-learning approach conducted as follows;
Students (experts) are given topics in advance to prepare for their seminar paper by researching
The seminar paper is presented orally
There is a session for the audience to ask questions, seek clarification and make comments on the presentation
The presenter then revises the seminar papers then submits for examination or publication
TUTORIALS
A teaching-learning approach that is more interactive and specific than a lecture. It consist of a small class where you can ask questions clarify what you have learnt, participate in activities and present a set of assignment
It’s normally organized by a lecturer or tutorial fellow.
It may be conducted as a follow-up of a previous lecture.
Students and lecturer exchange information through class presentation, asking questions and seeking clarifications.
Students are usually in smaller groups than usual lecture class.
They can be used as evaluation modes to establish if learning has taken place.
USES OF SEMINARS AND TUTORIALS
i. Create opportunities to explore topics in more depth. ii. They share ideas in a way that would advance your thinking. iii. They enhance individuals to learn from other people’s experience and background knowledge. iv. Create opportunity to gain perspectives and points of view that you might have otherwise considered.
v. They identify and sort out any misunderstanding.
