Gender equality has become a hot topic all over the world recently. Some people claim that this should begin with universities’ accepting equal number of males and females in every subject. Though this claim may well have merit, it only presents a poorly reasoned argument; we cannot accept this as valid.
Some people support balanced the number of males and females in every subject because men and women, nowadays, play similar roles in society. If universities prefer a sole gender in a particular subject, the equality that has been fought for years cannot be successful. However, this claim can be refuted by the following reasons.
Primarily, the fact that there is inequality between genders in some subjects is because those are the subjects suitable only for men or women. Take astronomy and construction for example. Flying into this guy requires tremendous strength from astronauts and long period of extreme training, which hardly can women at the capability of. In construction industry, it is necessary for builders to work under difficult conditions that need the stamina of people. Therefore, in reality, we do not see many women in those subjects. Moreover, there are subjects and careers which require the tenderness of women such as nursing.
The secondary reason is that the limited numbers of men and women in some subjects help orientate students to choose what they want to study. That is because knowing in advance that there is a larger number of students of the other gender in a particular subject helps a students to give careful thoughts to what he or she wants to study. Moreover, universities should choose students that have capabilities of learning the subjects.
