Outcome 1: (Knowledge)

1. Explain what it means to have a duty of care in your own work role.
My responsibilities under the duty of care are to do everything within my job role to make this happen. It is a legal requirement to safeguard the welfare and well being of the adults in my care. My duty of care involves keeping the individual safe and free from harm, give them choice and maintain their dignity and respect.

2. Explain how duty of care contributes to the safeguarding or protection of individuals.
Having a duty of care should guarantee the safeguarding of the adults in my care. It’s a legal obligation to always act in the best interest of individuals and others and not act in a way that results in harm. Risk assessments, policies and procedures, understanding signs of neglect and abuse and training and development are needed to fulfill this requirement.

1. Describe potential conflicts or dilemmas that may arise between the duty of care and an individual’s rights. (Give 2 examples)
The individual no longer wishes to use her walking frame, but her care plan states that she needs it to move from place to place, and you are to ensure you encourage its use.

Staff having a difference of opinion over an individual for e.g. believing they have signs of abuse and another staff member saying they don’t. This could therefore lead to conflict between family members, carers and or social services.
